Who are we voting for?

There are three types of elected representatives in the States.

Senators

Senators are elected on an island-wide mandate by all voters in Jersey. There are twelve Senatorial seats in the States. A Senator's term of office is six years and six out of the twelve Senatorial seats are contested at election every three years. This year's Senatorial election is on Wednesday 19 October.

Deputies

Deputies are elected to represent a parish or a district within a parish. Only the parishioners they seek to represent can vote for them. A Deputy's term of office is three years. The parishes of St Helier, St Brelade and St Saviour are the only parishes with more than one electoral district. Certain parishes and districts elect more than one Deputy. There are seventeen Deputorial constituencies in total, and a total of 29 Deputies are elected to the States. This year's Deputorial election is on Wednesday 23 November.

Others

The third type of elected representative is the Constable of each parish. Elections for constables do not all take place at the same time. Elect Jersey 2005 is focusing on the election for Senators and Deputies and will not include information about any Constables elections in this site.
